Trying to think of the restrictions to place on this question was actually quite a bit more difficult than you’d think. It started off with unlimited money and unlimited time. Then I decided, “well, you DO have to come back to real life at some point.” But that could just be a week before you die. So then I started to think of time frames. What’s a long enough vacation to completely alter your LIFE, but then force you to come back to this life? I’m going to say 3 months. Yes. 25% of the year on vacation sounds lovely to me.
If you had 3 months away from work and unlimited money (lol), what would you do and where would you go?
This is extremely open ended, and I’m not convinced that “unlimited” was the right dollar amount to assign to this challenge because people could say some pretty crazy stuff. Basically, I don’t want this commanded practice of daydreaming to be limited by money, but I also want it to be realistic.
Paying a guide to take you to the top of Everest? Sure. That’s not cheap, but it is realistic. Stopping in as many countries as possible in 3 months via planes, tranes, and automobiles (or maybe even a donkey)? Absolutely. But stuff like flying a harrier jet to drop you off at all of the 8,000 meter peaks in the world and then sailing a fleet of yachts filled with unimagineable luxury items around the Cape of Good Hope is pretty unrealistic. Just. I mean. C’mon. You know what I’m looking for.
So, how do you answer this question? What’s your dream adventure? How do you readjust to real life when you come back? Could you, or would you be forever changed?
P.S. This was supposed to be a really fun daydream for a Friday and now it’s kind of deep and philosophical….depending on how far you want to take it. Haha!
A 5 weeks touring UK -> Belgian -> German breweries, ending up at the foot of Alps then 7 weeks walking it off in Peru or Patagonia…
How does that sound?
Eric,
I can definitely get down with that! Anh and I were almost going to do a 3-week mini version of that this summer. 1 week at each stop in Belgium, Switzerland, and Barcelona. That dang ‘ol job of mine wouldn’t allow it though.
Good question, I’d love to go to Europe without a budget, see the sites, vacate, do some hikes in the mountains. I’d also love to do a overland trip in the US, get something like an Earthroamer RV and do a long trip out there, see a few sites, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, etc. So how’s that? A month in Europe, a flight back to the US, a month in an Earthroamer (can I keep it when we’re done?), and then maybe a month with a few other sites in the US, I think something like hiking the John Muir Trail would be a good end, or maybe that’s better in the middle so I don’t come home smelling too bad. Stuff I’d love to do with my kids someday if I had the money and the summers off.
Rich,
Faaaaaaaanntastic! I’ll join you!
